TongatapuThe largest island of Tonga is home to the country’s capital city of Nuku’alofa. There are several accommodation options in Nuku’alofa, ranging from the larger hotels like the International Dateline Hotel (76 rooms) and Pacific Royale Hotel (60 rooms), to the smaller hotels like Friendly Islands Hotel (26 rooms), Harbour View Motel (12 rooms) and Hotel Nuku’alofa (14 rooms). A quick 30 minute boat ride from Nuku’alofa takes you to Fafa Island Resort, a small coral island with 16 total fales (bungalows). This is a very Tongan resort, with traditional fales, two secluded honeymoon fales, a restaurant, bar, and plenty of activities. Royal Sunset Island Resort can be reached by a quick seaplane or 45-minute boat ride. With 26 total fales on both sides of this small island, you are guaranteed either a sunrise or sunset view. There are plenty of activities, and the staff is very friendly.
Ha'apaiThe islands in the Ha’apai group are perfect for those seeking to get away from it all. There are only a few accommodation options here, with the nicest being the Sandy Beach Resort. Another option is the Niu’akalo Beach Hotel, located just 10 minutes from the airport. There are 12 small rooms on landscaped grounds adjacent to a shallow lagoon and sandy beach.
Vava'uThe islands of the Vava’u group are rightfully popular, as there are many activities available in this wonderful area of Tonga. There are several accommodation options. One of the finest is the new Mala Island Resort. Mala Island Resort features 16 traditional Tongan bungalows with modern facilities. There are two beautiful beaches on the island, and there is a restaurant at the resort. The Tongan Beach Resort is in a great location, on a white sandy beach. The resort features 14 total rooms, including two unique overwater bungalows, perfect for a honeymoon couple. Mounu Island Resort is located on its own island, and features only three private fales, all situated on the water’s edge. This is a very private, quiet getaway. There are two hotels located not far from the town of Neiafu. The Paradise Hotel features 45 rooms with either harbour views or garden views. The spacious rooms are comfortable, and there is a restaurant on site. The Hilltop Guest House is also close to town, and has great views.
