Gizo IslandA tiny island located in the Western Province, is the capital of this area. During WWII it was also the site of some major battles where Kennedy Island is located (where JFK and his PT 109 boat crew were stranded) also many villages are here making for easy access to many fascinating land attractions. One being Skull Island with open tombs displaying the remains of the Roviana people.
Gizo Diving SitesTOA MARU - a 450 ft Japanese transport ship located in clear waters, she is virtually intact and contains many fascinating WWII artifacts. She now lies on her starboard side, filled with Saki bottles, small jars and gas masks, even the cooking wok in the kitchen are among the debris. Gizo offers an excellent balance of wreck and reef diving. On the wreck side, the fully intact Tora Maru - a 450 foot freighter, still loaded with artifacts. Reef wise, the most memorable dive for me is bustling Central Station. On a good day, you will see more action here than on a dozen dive sites in most other destinations.
